What a missed call costs a restoration company in ad spend

Short answerA missed call from an ad costs the full price of every click it took to produce it, before you count the lost job. With water damage clicks around $91 each on Google, a click-to-call rate of 10% means each paid call cost about $911. Since 1 October 2026, Google also charges Local Services Ads advertisers for many missed calls.

Most restoration owners know what a missed call costs in lost jobs. Fewer have done the other half of the math: what they already paid to make that phone ring. In paid search the money is spent before the call connects. If nobody picks up, the job is gone and the ad spend is gone with it.

This guide puts numbers on that, using published 2026 click and lead prices, our own after-hours call data, and a Google billing change that took effect on 1 October 2026.

How much does a restoration ad click cost in 2026?

Around $91 for the keyword "water damage restoration" across the U.S., and far more in big metros. Those figures come from Google Ads Keyword Planner data published by ALM Corp, which lists "water damage restoration dallas" at $251 a click.

Local Services Ads, the "Google Guaranteed" listings at the top of the page, charge per lead rather than per click. 99 Calls reports an average of $126 per charged water damage lead across 9 of its client campaigns as of October 2026, with a median of $100 and a typical range of $84 to $287.

Your own numbers will differ by market, season and how tightly your campaigns are built. The useful figure is the one in your own Google Ads account, and the rest of this guide shows what to do with it.

What does one phone call from an ad actually cost you?

Divide your cost per click by the share of clicks that turn into a phone call. Most clicks do not become calls: people read, compare, call a competitor, or leave. So the price of one ringing phone is many clicks deep.

Clicks that become callsClicks per callCost per call at $91 a click
5%20 clicks$1,821
10%10 clicks$911
20%5 clicks$455

These are scenarios, not benchmarks. Your real click-to-call rate is in Google Ads under conversions, if call tracking is set up. If it is not, that is the first thing to fix, because without it you cannot see which calls you paid for.

The point of the table: when a paid call goes to voicemail, you have not lost one click. You have lost every click it took to produce that call.

Does Google charge you for a missed Local Services Ads call?

Yes, since 1 October 2026, in many cases. Google told Local Services Ads advertisers in an email dated 24 August 2026 that missed calls during business hours are charged as valid leads when the caller stays on the line for more than 20 seconds, as reported by PPC Land.

Before this change, a missed LSA call cost you the job. Now it can cost you the job and a lead fee of around $100 to $126. Check your own LSA lead list for charged calls marked as missed.

How often do restoration calls go unanswered?

After hours, more often than not. When we placed after-hours calls to 159 U.S. restoration companies, 54% never reached a person: 28% went to voicemail and 26% rang out with no voicemail at all. Only 73 reached a live person. The full method and results are in the after-hours line test.

That test measured whether a human answered, not where the calls came from. But a homeowner who finds water at midnight and searches for help is exactly the person most likely to click an ad and call. If your campaigns run overnight and your phone does not get answered overnight, you are buying calls you cannot take.

How do you work out what missed calls cost your ad budget?

Four numbers from your own account: monthly ad spend, cost per click, the share of clicks that call, and how many of those calls went unanswered. Multiply the unanswered calls by the cost per call.

A worked example, with made-up inputs so the arithmetic is easy to follow:

StepExample
Monthly search spend$10,000
Clicks at $91 each110
Calls at a 10% click-to-call rate11
Cost per call$909
Calls that went unanswered3
Ad spend that bought nothing$2,727

That is only the ad spend. The bigger number is the jobs those callers gave to someone else. Put your missed calls and average job value into the missed-call calculator to see that side.

Where to find the inputs: spend and cost per click are on the Google Ads campaigns page. Calls from ads appear under conversions if call tracking is on. Unanswered calls are in your phone system's call log, or in the LSA lead list for Local Services Ads.

Is it cheaper to answer more calls or to buy more clicks?

Answering is almost always cheaper, because the calls you miss are already paid for. Raising your budget buys more calls at the same miss rate. Fixing the miss rate turns calls you already bought into jobs.

MoveWhat it does to cost per job
Raise the budgetMore calls, same share missed. Cost per job stays flat or rises as you bid into pricier clicks.
Pause ads overnightStops paying for calls you cannot take, but hands the midnight water loss to a competitor.
Answer every callSame spend, more of it converts. Cost per job falls.

Pausing overnight is a reasonable stopgap if nobody can answer. The options for covering nights properly, from an on-call tech to a night dispatcher to an answering service, are compared in night dispatcher vs answering service. To check whether your own line is the leak, run the after-hours line test on yourself.

What we are not claiming: the click and lead prices above are third-party figures, not ours, and your account will differ. The click-to-call rates in the tables are scenarios, and the worked example uses made-up inputs. Our line test measured whether a human answered after hours, not whether the caller came from an ad. The Local Services Ads billing summary is based on Google's advertiser email as reported by PPC Land; check your own LSA account and Google's current help pages for how it applies to you.

Questions owners ask

How much does a water damage restoration click cost on Google Ads?

Google Ads Keyword Planner data published by ALM Corp puts the keyword "water damage restoration" at about $91 per click across the U.S., and $251 for "water damage restoration dallas". Your own market and campaign setup will change the figure.

How much does a Local Services Ads lead cost for water damage restoration?

99 Calls reports an average of $126 per charged lead and a median of $100 across 9 water damage campaigns as of October 2026, with a typical range of $84 to $287.

Does Google charge for missed Local Services Ads calls?

From 1 October 2026, missed calls during business hours are charged as valid leads when the caller stays on the line for more than 20 seconds, according to Google's email to advertisers as reported by PPC Land. If your phone system makes callers press a key first, the timer starts after the key press.

How do I calculate what a missed call costs in ad spend?

Divide your cost per click by the share of clicks that become calls to get your cost per call. Multiply that by the number of ad calls that went unanswered. That is the ad spend that bought nothing, before counting the lost job.

Should a restoration company pause Google Ads at night?

Only if nobody can answer at night. Pausing stops paying for calls you cannot take, but overnight water losses are urgent and the caller will hire whoever answers. Covering the phone usually returns more than pausing saves.
